Ooredoo launches new Asia-Africa-Europe subsea cable

A new Asia-Africa-Europe subsea cable system has been laid by Ooredoo, linking the internet hubs of the three continents to Qatar.

A new Asia-Africa-Europe-1 (AAE-1) subsea cable system has been laid by Ooredoo, linking the internet hubs of the three continents to Qatar.

The 25,000km submarine cable is the third longest in the world and one of the highest capacity systems under deployment on a global scale.

Waleed Al Sayed, CEO of Ooredoo Qatar said: “The AAE-1 cable will provide people in Qatar with access to new, high-speed global routing, and faster, more reliable bandwidth.” The cable, which will be completed by the end of this year, provides low latency access to Europe and Asia. The cable is part of the infrastructure to  support the planned launch of 5G services in the Gulf state.

“As part of our vision to continually enhance Ooredoo Supernet, we are investing in major Internet infrastructure that will enable Qatar to become one of the best-connected countries,” Al Sayed said.

The cable will also land in Hong Kong, Vietnam, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Greece, Italy, France,  Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Oman, the UAE and Yemen.

Senior Ooredoo executives gathered at Simaisma beach to witness the landing of the cable system.

Ooredoo is one of the anchor members of AAE-1 project, working with international partners to strengthen global Internet infrastructure and provide new routes for Internet traffic.

Ooredoo Global Services has played a key role as a consortium partner in the development of the project along with Ooredoo Qatar, Technology Unit, who took part in the project management and coordinated with local and foreign authorities to obtain permits.
