Globe Telecom to shut down UK, Italy and Spain offices

Globe Telecom has announced the closure of its European offices in the UK, Italy and Spain.

As part of a continued effort to serve its customers in those areas, Globe Telecom will keep DUO International, its smart-calling service through existing partnerships with other operators.

At the same time, the operator has expanded its operations in Asia by setting up GlobeTel Japan. The move is believed to better serve its domestic customers in the Philippines as well as its customers in Japan.

“We will continue to provide affordable and high-quality telecom services to our kababayans in Japan. We will also be adopting new business models to deliver meaningful products to overseas Filipinos,” said Nikko Acosta, Globe SVP for international business.

Globe said it will retain its other global offices in the US, Singapore and Hong Kong as well as its retail presence in other markets such as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Separately, Globe and Phillippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) are set to defend the acquisition of San Miguel’s telecoms assets in court. The Philippines competition watchdog is investigating the joint acquisition for potential anti-trust law violations.
