Telekom Malaysia and Hurricane Electric partner for IP broadband services

Telekom Malaysia (TM) and Hurricane Electric (HE) have signed a strategic partnership agreement aimed at accelerating their goal of delivering high-speed internet broadband services to Asia’s emerging markets.

The deal is said to leverage TM’s ownership in multiple Asia Pacific submarine cable systems linking the major regional hubs to new and growing markets in Asia. Telekom Malaysia is part of key regional cable projects, including MCT, BBG, SEA-ME-WE 5 and others.

HE is expected to strengthen TM with significantly enhanced global IP reach. Its platform is said to enable TM’s expansion in services such as cloud and media as well as video streaming services.

Rozaimy Rahman, executive vice president of TM Global & Wholesale, said the strategic agreement taps into the strengths of both companies, “positioning each of them to lead the Asia-Pacific market in emerging technologies”.

“Particularly compelling, TM’s partnership with Hurricane Electric facilitates the successful rollout of TM’s 100Mbps UniFi Pro and UniFi Biz Pro services to the Malaysian consumer and enterprise markets – strengthening TM’s position as a market leader in delivering converged IP based services,” added Rahman.

Mike Leber, CEO of Hurricane Electric, said: “This agreement propels both TM and HE forward in their shared objective to create and deliver next-generation IP based services to users throughout Asia.  In addition to greatly expanding HE’s network reach in Asia Pacific, we look forward to our partnership with TM opening opportunities for the companies to collaborate on new and exciting projects in the future.”

The partnership will also support TM’s High Speed Broadband Project Phase 2 (HSBB2),  Suburban Broadband Project (SUBB) as well as the broadband initiatives of TM’s subsidiary Packet One Network (P1).
