Equinix and Facebook team up to build OCP ecosystem

Equinix have teamed up with Facebook to leverage its Open Compute Project (OCP) technology to develop an open source-based ecosystem within its network of data centres.

Building upon OCP contributions, the ecosystem inside its Equinix International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centres will be built on a new, open source architecture that will enable faster innovation and help to enable enterprises to create next generation IoT and hybrid cloud platforms.

“By working together, we can drive technology evolution for interconnection by defining the next-generation architecture for the network and cloud edge, thus ensuring our customers have the scale and performance they require for newly evolving platforms and applications,” said Ihab Tarazi, CTO of Equinix.

Equinix has incorporated Facebook-developed Wedge open source switched to facilitate interconnections between its customers and their various clouds and networks.

Facebook’s chairman and president of the OCP foundation, and VP of infrastructure, Jason Taylor, added: “The OCP community works best when there is strong collaboration between companies, and that’s why I think the work on this open architecture for software and hardware is so important. I look forward to seeing how the use of OCP technology like Wedge open network switches helps Equinix better meet the needs of enterprises.”

The news comes ahead of today’s OCP Summit, where the Equinix deal will be a key component of Taylor’s keynote speech.

Facebook launched OCP in 2011 to share designs of servers and other data centre equipment.

Google joined the project yesterday and will donate a specification for a rack that it designed for its own data centres.
