NTT DoCoMo selects Alcatel-Lucent to address mobile traffic growth

Japan’s NTT DoCoMo is to deploy Alcatel-Lucent’s IP core/edge routing platform to manage its rapidly increasing demand for data services.

DoCoMo is allegedly experiencing a notable increase in 4G LTE mobile service adoption, and a second surge of data traffic is expected as the internet of things (IoT) begins to take hold.

Alcatel-Lucent’s 7950 XRS core/edge platform is designed to enable DoCoMo to increase the operational performance of its network as well as reduce the cost of operations.

“Customer demand for data continues to accelerate and we are committed to providing the best service experience for every one of our subscribers,” said Kazuo Sugiyama, managing director of core network development department at NTT DoCoMo.

“Alcatel-Lucent has proven the performance of its IP routing technologies and its IP core/edge router will allow us to increase performance even as that demand continues in the future.”

Japan’s ministry of internal affairs and communications has predicted that data traffic in the country will double year-on-year, resulting in a thousand-fold increase between now and 2020.

“NTT DoCoMo is a company that is well-known for its emphasis on quality and reliability to offer the most innovative services to customers,” said Nicolas Bouverot, president of Alcatel-Lucent Japan.

“As such, we are very pleased to be able to deliver our powerful IP core/edge route to help NTT DoCoMo support the increasing mobile traffic and the introduction of 5G.”
