Egypt plans to double telecoms investment, says president

Egypt’s president, Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi, says the state plans to double its investment in the telecommunications sector.

Al-Sisi announced the launch of two infrastructure initiatives, speaking at a technology conference in Cairo.

An electronics design and industry initiative aims to increase revenue to $3bn over three years. An educational project aims to train and qualify about 5,000 graduates every year through direct learning, in addition to 11,000 trainees, using mixed learning methods.

Al-Sisi said that “the telecommunications industry has contributed by over 52 billion Egyptian pounds ($6.6 billion) to the national economy, which is about 3%, in the past fiscal year”, according to the Egypt Daily News. He added that the sector provides about one million direct and indirect jobs.

He said that Egypt is seeking to build a digital society to transform the economy into a knowledge-based economy, through the development of government systems and by linking the government’s data and private databases together to provide services to all citizens, including those living in rural and remote areas.
