SK Telecom and Nokia Networks sign MoU for narrowband IoT
SK Telecom and Nokia Networks have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly research and develop narrowband IoT communication technologies.
Under the plan, both companies will co-develop narrowband IoT technology utilising a bandwidth of 200KHz.
Specifically designed for IoT, narrowband IoT is a radio technology that is presently being standardised by the 3GPP standards body. It is designed to maximise efficiency by supporting low-power transmission of small data among a huge number of low throughput devices.
“Through the MOU, SK Telecom and Nokia Networks will develop and secure NB-IoT, which is a powerful technology that can support a wide range of IoT services involved with transmission of ultra-small data,” said Park Jin-hyo, senior VP and head of network R&D center at SK Telecom. “We will continue to make multifaceted efforts to develop and secure key IoT technologies to lead the global industry.”
The two companies will also develop a variety of use cases and key technologies related to narrowband IoT while leading standardization efforts.
Separately SK Telecom is conducting research and studies in networks specialized for IoT – including LTE machine type communication (MTC) and low power wide-area network (LPWAN).
