NTT DoCoMo and Nokia achieve 2Gbps in mmWave trial

NTT DoCoMo and Nokia Networks have successfully tested millimetre wave (mmWave) technology, achieving a peak connection speed of over 2Gbps.

The trial, which utilised used spectrum in the 70GHz band, took place in the high-rise Roppongi Hills complex in Tokyo.

The demonstration is said to be the first time 5G data had been transmitted in a commercial building where signal strength is often affected due to non-line of sight connectivity.

"This time, however, the trial was successful thanks to the use of two new technologies: beamforming, which focuses radio waves in a specific direction, and beam tracking to control beam direction according to the mobile device's location," said DoCoMo.

Beam tracking technology has the ability to steer radio waves to the location of mobile devices.

In a separate trial, NTT DoCoMo and Samsung delivered a peak connection speed of 2.5Gbps to a vehicle travelling at 60km/h using 28GHz spectrum.

DoCoMo said it will continue to research and develop advanced network technologies aimed at the commercial launch of 5G mobile communications systems.
