Viettel expands in Tanzania with $736 million investment

Vietnam’s Viettel has launched 2G and 3G services in Tanzania under the Halotel brand.

The company has invested $736 million in deploying a network covering 26 provinces in Tanzania.

“Viettel’s vision is to provide every Tanzanian with a mobile phone and bring communication and information technology to every corner of life of the country,” said Nguyen Manh Hung, general director of Viettel Group. “Our entry into Tanzania reflects our belief that when telecommunications services are accessible to everyone, and become a part of everyday life, they can be a driving force contributing to socio-economic development for the country as a whole.”

The operator’s investment in Africa comes after the rollout of services in Cameroon and Burundi through Lumitel and Nextel earlier this year, and in Mozambique through Movitel in 2014.

Viettel operates in 10 markets globally and has expanded into four markets – three in Africa – and acquired another operator in Cambodia. It is said to own an infrastructure comprising 18,000km of optical cable and over 3,000 base transceivers. In addition its services reportedly cover up to 81% of Tanzania’s populations.
