Myanmar delays fourth mobile licence

The government of Myanmar — formerly Burma — has postponed announcement of the winner of its fourth mobile licence from the end of September until mid October.

A local news site, the Irrawaddy, reported that Chit Wai, the deputy permanent secretary of communications in the government of Myanmar, “that the selection process was ‘not yet complete’, but that the winners will be chosen in the next few weeks.”

A total of 17 local companies expressed interest in the licence, which will allow one competitor to enter the market already occupied by the government’s MPT, in a partnership with KDDI, and with Ooredoo and Telenor, two foreign companies that started business in 2014.

Only domestic companies have been allowed to bid for the fourth licence, but the winner will be required to work with an international operator that the government will choose.

“We’re trying to select them as soon as possible, but it won’t be done this month,” the official told the Myanmar website. The ministry expects to announce the winners by the second week of October, said the report. The total number of winning bidders has not yet been determined, Chit Wai told the Irawaddy.
