Spirit Communications selects Alcatel-Lucent for terabit speeds

US-based service provider Spirit Communications has partnered with Alcatel-Lucent for its 7950 XRS core router to support increasing data capacity demands in the country’s South East.

Spirit has noted a growing demand for high-speed broadband services from its enterprise and government customers in the region, and Alcatel-Lucent’s core router is designed to provide the terabyte-speed IP core network needed for the fast delivery of these services.

“The high density 10GE XMAs, along with new chipsets supporting 400GE, ensure that Spirit is implementing a solution that is efficient today and scalable well into the future for IP peering applications,” said Larry Sims, EVP of engineering and operations at Spirit Communications.

“In addition, the inherent knowledge of SROS from our 7750 MPLS core allows for reduced OPEX as we transition our internet core to the 7950 XRS platform.”

Spirit will initially set the high speed service live in Charlotte, NC; Columbia, SC, as well as select areas of the Carolinas and GA.

“Spirit Communications has ensured its customers will have the cost effective connectivity, bandwidth and speeds necessary to support HD voice, data and advanced applications and services for years to come,” said Charles Marsh, president of Americas sales, Alcatel-Lucent.

“At 16 tbps switching capacity, Alcatel-Lucent’s 7950 XRS allows Spirit to deliver a lightning fast Internet experience to support its growing IP traffic demands while also keeping operational costs low.”
