Liberty Global submits concessions for Base acquisition

Liberty Global has submitted concessions to the European Commission in a bid to gain approval for its €1.33 billion acquisition of KPN's Belgian unit Base.

The move comes after Telenor and TeliaSonera called off plans to merge their Danish operations last week as a result of being unable to meet the European Commission’s demand for a fourth operator.

The Commission will make a decision by October 5 on whether to launch an in-depth antitrust investigation into the proposed deal between Liberty Global and KPN. No further information about the concessions was disclosed.

In April 2015, KPN entered into a definitive agreement with Telenet Global, a subsidiary of Liberty Global, to sell Base.

In a statement following the announcement of the failed merger of TeliaSonera and Telenor's Danish units, European competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager said: "Every case has to be assessed on its own facts and merits.”

"In this specific case, based on the Commission's in-depth analysis and evidence gathered, we are convinced that the significant competition concerns required an equally significant remedy. What the parties offered was not sufficient to avoid harm to competition in Danish mobile markets,” she added.
