China Unicom has appointed Wang Xiaochu as executive director, chairman and chief executive officer at the company, effective September 1.

Prior to this role, Xiaochu has held numerous senior positions at telecoms companies across China, including the Hangzhou Telecommunications Bureau in Zhejiang province, the Tianjin Posts and Telecommunications Administration, China Mobile Communications, China Telecom Corporation and China Communications Services Corporation.

He is also chairman of China United Network Communications Group; China Unicom’s parent company.

Xiaochu graduated from Beijing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications and also has a doctorate degree in business administration from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Earlier this year, China Unicom teamed up with Huawei for the development of a cellular internet of things (cIoT) pilot using LTE-machine to machine (LTE-M) technology.
