NII Holdings appoints Nextel Brazil president

Latin American mobile operator NII Holdings has appointed Francisco Tosta Valim Filho as president of its Brazilian unit Nextel Brazil.

Valim succeeds Gokul Hemmady, who has served as president since 2013 and will report directly to NII’s CEO Steve Shindler. He will be responsible for leading the company’s operations in Brazil.

Prior to joining Nextel Brazil, Valim was CEO of Via Varejo, one of the largest electronic and furniture retailers in Latin America, from 2013 to 2014. He was CEO of Brazil’s Oi between 2011 and 2013.

“Francisco is a proven leader with significant expertise in the wireless telecommunications sector in Brazil and in business transformation and optimisation of organisational processes, having successfully served as CEO of several large telecoms and media companies in Brazil,” said Shindler.

“We are confident that Francisco is the right person to lead Nextel Brazil as we strive to build our subscriber base and increase revenues while continuing to reduce our costs.”
