KT and NEC to collaborate on 5G

South Korean operator KT has signed an agreement with Japanese vendor NEC to collaborate on the development of 5G networks.

The two companies will jointly research, develop and test 5G technologies, as well as make combined contributions to the standardisation activities of 5G.

KT and NEC have already partnered in SDN and are also conducting joint R&D trials in NFV as well as management and network orchestration (MANO).

“With this new collaboration on 5G networks, we are delighted to further deepen our existing relationship with KT,” said Shunichiro Tejima, EVP at NEC Corporation.

“I firmly believe KT and NEC can contribute to realising innovative communications services in South Korea, one of the most advanced countries in communications technology and infrastructure.”

South Korea has seemingly placed itself well ahead of the game when it comes to 5G research, and in March this year, KT signed a MoU with Ericsson for 5G development.

South Korea also penned a deal with the European Union in June 2014 where they agreed to work together on the standardisation of 5G technology.
