Orange in talks to sell Armenia unit to Ucom

Orange has entered into exclusive talks with Armenian internet service provider Ucom to sell its mobile subsidiary Orange Armenia.

The planned sale is part of Orange’s 'Essentials 2020' plan to focus on providing customers with services that combine both mobile and fixed networks. As part of that strategy, the operator has acquired Jazztel in Spain and sold its joint venture company EE to BT in the UK.

“Although significant progress has been made in recent years, both in terms of subscriber numbers and profitability, largely thanks to the efforts made by its staff, Orange Armenia does not have the necessary scale to carry out by itself the massive investments required to enable it to offer its customers convergent services,” said the company.

The sale of Orange Armenia would create an operator which offers a range of fixed and mobile services in the country, said the company.

The French operator was reportedly considering the acquisition of four subsidiaries from Airtel Africa

Established in 2009, Orange Armenia has deployed one of the country’s largest 3G+ networks in its capital Yerevan and in rural areas. The operator has 630,000 customers in the country at the end of 2014.
