As part of the agreement the operator will distribute Akamai’s product portfolio, which includes security services and web acceleration, in the Italian market.
The deal, which the companies said was driven by large growth in the digital media, also includes a direction connection between Telecom Italia’s IP network and Akami’s global platform.
"Akamai's technology, together with Telecom Italia's platforms and network, gives customers access to more efficient solutions for the use of content," said Simone Battiferri, executive vice president for business market at Telecom Italia.
"This is much more important in a market like today's where multimedia services on the internet are used by a great variety of terminals and devices where speed plays a key role."
According to the companies, the partnership demonstrates how a telco and content delivery network player can maximise internet infrastructure assets to enhance the experience of end users on premium content.
Akamai has entered into cloud-based partnerships with telcos such as PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International, Singtel and China Telecom.
