Three bidders in running for Lebanese mobile tender

Lebanese telecoms minister Boutros Harb has told local reporters that the government has received two formal applications in its public tender for management of its state-owned mobile networks, and is expecting a third.

France’s Orange and Kuwait’s Zain Group are the two acknowledged applicants in the public tender for Lebanese mobile networks Touch and Alfa. The managing contracts for both are due to expire at the end of this year.

“We will soon also be receiving a third application from a Turkish company that asked for the modification of one item in the contract,” Harb told local reporters.

“So we have three companies applying for the tender so far.”

Zain Group is the existing management contract holder for Touch Lebanon, and it is not yet known if Alfa’s management firm, Egypt’s Orascom Telecom Media & Technology (OTMT), will also be applying.

Earlier this month, Harb revealed a five year plan for the deployment of high-speed fibre-optic broadband infrastructure in the country.
