KT launches 1.17Gbps GiGA LTE

South Korea’s KT has launched what it claims is the world’s fastest mobile service by combining LTE and Wifi networks to achieve a peak speed of 1.17Gbps.

The GiGA-LTE mobile service is said to be 15 times faster than existing LTE and four times faster than the tri-band carrier aggregation.

KT said it has been collaborating with Samsung Electronics to develop the high-speed network. The service will be initially offered to 4G customers on Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge and gradually rolled out to five or six Samsung models and some LG Electronics phones in the second half of 2015. Customers can upgrade their mobile network to the GiGA-LTE through a free firmware.

The service will leverage KT’s 200,000 LTE base stations and 300,000 Wifi zones across the country.

In addition KT plans to open a 5G test-bed at its research and development centre in Seoul in July 2015 with the aim to provide 5G communications services at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.
