The auction will see 270MHz of spectrum from the 700MHz, 900MHz, 1500MHz and 1800MHz bands auctioned.
Germany is the first country in Europe to release the 700MHz frequency band for mobile broadband, part of the spectrum that was previously used for terrestrial television.
According to the Bundesnetzagentur, the German telecoms regulator, a switch to digital terrestrial television means that part of spectrum will be freed and can be used for mobile broadband.
"We expect the auction to provide a strong impetus for a rapid rollout of the broadband networks, especially in rural areas,” said Jochen Homann, president of the Bundesnetzagentur.
The three operators are the only companies admitted to the auction, which will relicense spectrum as well as offer licences for the 700MHz band.
