Huawei Marine pens deal with MCT consortium

Huawei Marine has agreed to provide the system design and construction of the Malaysia-Cambodia-Thailand (MCT) subsea cable.

The Chinese vendor has signed an agreement with the MCT consortium – comprising Telekom Malaysia, Symphony Communication and Telcotech – for the deployment of the cable which will span approximately 1,300km between Cherating, Malaysia and Rayong, Thailand, with a connecting branch to Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

The cable will allegedly adopt 100G technology with a total design capacity exceeding 30Tbps, and Huawei Marine will deploy its optical amplifier that supports up to six fibre pairs.

“We are honoured to partner with our customers and start working on the development and construction of the MCT optical superhighway to deliver state-of-the-art infrastructure which will contribute to the economic growth and development of the Indochina region,” said Ma Yanfeng, VP at Huawei Marine.

The signing was witnessed by Prak Sokhonn, Cambodia’s minister of post and telecommunications as well as a number of other senior Cambodian government officials.

The cable will be Cambodia’s first landing of a high-speed, high capacity submarine cable system, and is expected to provide the country and its neighbours with significantly increased international bandwidth. It is due to go live in Q4 2016.

In October last year, Huawei Marine started worked on the Far East submarine system designed to deliver enhanced communications services to Russia.
