The operator said its “100% Fibre Orange” initiative will make Paris the first 100% fibre capital in Europe. The cities are Bayonne, Brest, Caen, Nice, Montpellier, Lyon, greater Lille, Metz, and Paris.
“100% Fibre means a seamless multiple-screen and multiple-usage experience. This means access to a new level of data sharing and immersive entertainment services using 100% future-oriented technology compatible with new uses,” said the operator.
According to Orange, connected devices and screens per household have increased from four in 2009 to 6.5 in 2014, with a forecast of 13 by 2022.
The plan is part of a €4.5 billion fibre investment by the operator, of which €3 billion will be spent in France. In addition, Orange announced a target to bring FTTH to 12 million households by 2018, followed by 20 million households by the end of 2022, as part of France’s ultra-fast broadband plan.
The operator will start offering fibre services to all fibre-eligible consumers from May 2015.
