CityFibre completes phase one of FTTP roll-out with Sky and TalkTalk

UK network infrastructure provider CityFibre has completed phase one of its fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) project in York as part of a joint venture with Sky and TalkTalk.

Phase one focussed on enabling all partners in the venture to validate key network design principles, engineering processes and deployment economics.

“As a team, Sky, TalkTalk and CityFibre have validated a network design for true, ultra-fast fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) for residents and fibre to the premises (FTTP) for business users,” said Greg Mesch, CityFibre CEO.

The success of the first phase means phase two has now been approved to begin, and Mesch expects phase two to accelerate the deployments and determine the scalability of the infrastructure.

“Without the bottlenecks that exist in traditional networks, an ultra-fast fibre infrastructure will future-proof a city, offering superior quality of service and higher speeds as demand for bandwidth increases,” he added.

The joint venture is an attempt to provide a more cost-effective alternative to BT’s Openreach infrastructure. CityFibre is one of several UK players to oppose BT’s recent acquisition of EE, and earlier this week, Mesch said that he thought the deal was “anti-competitive”.
