Thailand to proceed with 4G auction in September

Thailand will hold an auction for 4G mobile spectrum as scheduled in September, said its deputy prime minister Pridiyathorn Devakula.

The announcement comes after local media published reports that the planned auction will be postponed.

The 4G auction, which will focus on spectrum in the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands, was originally scheduled for mid-2014 but was postponed for a year by the military government last July.

The country’s government will not interfere with the planned auction and the industry’s regulator National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) will be in charge of the bidding process, said the deputy prime minister. NBTC aims to generate around $1.53 billion (50 billion baht) from the auction.

"The government will set up a new temporary committee to help oversee the digital economy policy, which will also consider 4G issues before handing over authority to NBTC," Devakula told reporters, adding the committee is expected to begin meeting in March.
