Sri Lanka Telecom appoints chairman

The Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) Group has appointed PG Kumarasinghe – brother of the Sri Lankan president Maithripala Sirisena – as chairman at the company, according to local reports.

Kumarasinghe is the company’s eighth chairman following its privatisation in 1996, and his role was effective as of January 22 2015.

“Sri Lanka Telecom has a great responsibility towards the people of this country as well as the national economy in lieu of being one of its largest contributors,” Kumarasinghe said.

“I am confident that everyone at SLT will support me with dedication, accountability and team spirit in my efforts to make SLT realise broader and bigger dimensions.”

SLT Group consists of seven subsidiaries and in November last year, deployed Vanrise’s monitoring and routing voice solutions on its international network.

Prior to this week’s appointment, Kumarasinghe was co-ordinating secretary to the leader of the house in the Sri Lankan parliament, and has also served as board director of organisations such as Mahaweli Engineering Services, as well as financial consultant for the Araliya Group.

He holds Masters’ degrees in business administration and publication management.
