Slovakia opens broadband spectrum auction

Slovakia has opened an auction for three blocks of broadband data frequencies, in a bid to enhance mobile internet in the country.

The Slovakian regulator is offering two 8x5MHz FDD and TDD blocks and one 4.x5MHz TDD block, with minimum bids set at €600,000 and €300,000 respectively.

The deadline for bids is February 18, 2015, and the maximum an operator can bid for is 40MHz.

The auction reportedly comes as a result of several frequency licences in the country being close to their expiration date.

The licences of Swan, a new player to the market and one of four that secured LTYE spectrum in the 1800MHz auction in January 2014, and GTS are due to expire in August 2015.

Orange Slovakia also won spectrum last year, and in March 2014, partnered with Alcatel-Lucent for the roll-out of its 4G LTE network
