KT and Alcatel-Lucent to accelerate NFV adoption

Korea’s KT and multinational vendor Alcatel-Lucent have signed a technical agreement pledging to drive innovation and the faster adoption of network functions virtualisation (NFV).

The two companies will work together to create an NFV proof-of-concept that KT hopes to use as the basis for architecture development in its Giga Network strategy.

“KT is happy to collaborate on our NFV proof-of-concept with Alcatel-Lucent, which has been delivering open and integrated NFV and SDN products,” said HongBeom Jeon, head of Technology Infra Laboratory Center at KT.

“We expect this collaboration will help us create converged services for Gigatopia era and develop new revenue generation models.”

NFV technology is expected to increase efficiency and lower costs, as well as speed up product development and service creation flexibility.

The proof-of-concept will use Alcatel-Lucent’s evolved packet core (vEPC), CloudBand NFV platform and the virtualised services platform (VSP) from its subsidiary, Nuage Networks.

“We look forward to helping KT transition its EPC network functions to operate in an NFV/SDN environment,” said Chi Il Yoo, head of Alcatel-Lucent Korea.

“Combining vEPC, CloudBand and Nuage Networks VSP for SDN provides an innovative architectural model to answer the demand for next-generation application workloads and to optimise capex and opex for delivering KT’s mobile broadband services.”
