Zamtel and NEC to build Zambian microwave network

Zamtel and NEC Corporation have partnered for the deployment of a digital microwave radio transmission network in Zambia.

The network is designed to boost mobile coverage and capacity for enterprises and consumers in the country, and is expected to complete within the next 12 months.

“This partnership will see NEC design, manufacture, supply, deliver, install, test, migrate and commission a native Ethernet microwave backbone and access radios specifically tailored to Zamtel’s requirements,” said Mupanga Mwanakatwe, CEO at Zamtel.

The project – with a price tag of $18,329,326 – will include the installation of 2Gbps, 600Mbps, 300Mbps and 150Mbps backbone and access networks, and is expected to help Zamtel to meet the growing demands for mobile data, as well as support its LTE roll-out.

“NEC’s highly reliable and cost-effective solution will enable Zamtel to support continued economic growth and underpin emerging services, such as mobile money and high definition mobile TV, in both rural and urban locations,” said Nobuhiro Endo, president at NEC Corporation.

In July last year, Zambian regulators filed criminal lawsuits against three operators in the country, including Zamtel, for failing to meet quality of service parameters.
