South Korean data traffic is 92% 4G

South Korea’s Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning has released figures stating that 4G accounts for 92% of all data traffic in the country.

The figures showed recorded approximately 70,000Tb of 4G traffic in June, and this increased by 34% to 93,746Tb in July.

Average monthly 4G usage leapt from 2.3Gb in April to nearly 3Gb in July, compared to an average 3G usage of just 1.2Gb per month.

South Korea has been making strides with its innovative approach to data services and all three of its major players launched unlimited 4G payment plans in April.

SK Telecom holds 50% of the mobile market in South Korea, but, according to GSMA Intelligence, the company lost a few thousand subscribers in Q2 with more than 600,000 migrating from 3G to 4G.

KT holds a 31% market share and saw more than 700,000 users move to 4G, while LG Uplus – with a 19% share of the market – saw 350,000 3G users switch to 4G during the period.

In March, all three operators were hit by suspensions from the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), for alleged unfair practices to win customers in the country.
