Apple and China Telecom strike data storage agreement

Technology giant Apple has reportedly began to store user data in China on servers owned by China Telecom.

As part of the move, Apple is attempting to improve the speed and reliability of its operations in the country.

Apple’s play is significant considering the fact that many technology companies, including Google, has said it will not build data centres in China because of censorship and privacy concerns.

Apple said today that all data stored with China Telecom, as well as data stored with data centre providers worldwide, will be encrypted.

“Apple takes user security and privacy very seriously,” it said in a statement. “We have added China Telecom to our list of data centre providers to increase bandwidth and improve performance for our customers in mainland China. All data stored with our providers in encrypted.”

Apple said that China Telecom will not have access to its content.

Apple’s move in China follows a trend adopted by technology companies to position data centres close to customers because smaller physical distances results in faster services.
