Moldcell secures mobile licences

The National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI) in Moldova has awarded three mobile licences to Moldcell.

Subsidiary of Nordic operator TeliaSonera, Moldcell paid a total of MDL25.5 million ($15.16 million) for spectrum in the 800MHz, 900MHz and 1800MHz bands.

The decision reportedly falls in line with new regulation stating that the expiration date of all mobile licences issued to operators in the country must be synchronised.

ANRCETI said that the regulation is designed to ensure fair competition in the market and create an environment where technology neutrality can be implemented.

Moldcell will use the spectrum to develop lower cost 4G LTE services as well as extend its coverage.

The company secured 2 x 10MHz in the 800MHz band, 2 x 10MHz in the 900MHz band and 2 x 25MHz in the 1800MHz, and the remaining two licences – 2 x 5MHz in the 900MHz band and 2 x 25MHz in the 1800MHz band – will reportedly be issued to Moldtelecom.

In February this year, Moldetelcom partnered with Astellia for voice and data auditing on its 4G network.
