Telefónica pushes ahead with 4G upgrade

Telefónica has selected Nokia Networks to provide radio access equipment and services as part of its network upgrade to 4G across Spain.

The vendor will be a key supplier for sites in Andalusia, Galicia, Castilla León and Levante over a period of three years.

As part of the agreement, Nokia will upgrade Telefónica’s mobile network and implement 4G using its Single RAN Advanced solution. The Spanish operator’s networks will also be monitored and managed by Nokia’s NetAct management system.

“Our customers are increasingly adopting advanced smartphones and enjoying data-heavy multimedia content, so delivering more services while improving their quality is more important than ever,” said Joaquín Mata, head of network technology and operations at Telefónica.

“This modernisation, one of the greatest of the kind ever carried out in Spain, will allow us to achieve these goals and optimise the performance of our network to offer the best possible user experience,” he added.

Telefónica began deploying its 4G network in Spain in September 2013 in collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson.
