France's Alcatel-Lucent claims to have set a world record for broadband speed over traditional copper telephone lines, reaching 10Gbps for data transmission. Alcatel's research arm, Bell Labs, used prototype technology called XG-FAST to demonstrate how existing copper networks can be used to deliver ultra-broadband services, as well as 1Gbps symmetrical services. Etisalat and Huawei have announced the successful trial of the Chinese vendor's 400G technology on a commercially available optical transport network (OTN) in UAE. The technology is designed to expand the network capacity of operators and help the companies to manage increasing bandwidth demands from local customers. [read more]


Reliance Jio Infocomm has reportedly signed a strategic tower infra sharing agreement with Indian mobile service provider Videocon Telecom. The deal will see the two firms optimise and share telecoms infrastructure across India, in a bid to reduce costs, preserve critical capital and environment and deliver better quality of service. Kazakhtelecom subsidiary Altel has launched LTE networks in Kyzylorda and Taraz, in the south of the country, according to local reports. The network in Kyzylorda is said to operate speeds of up to 100Mbps and Altel plans to deploy a GSM/UMTS network in the city later this year. [read more]


UNE EPM Telecomunicaciones has partnered with French vendor Alcatel-Lucent to deploy what is claimed to be Colombia's first 100G ultra-broadband backbone network. The roll-out is designed to meet increasing demand from both mobile and fixed-line customers in urban areas for faster broadband services. [read more]


Telefónica has signed an agreement with mobile services provider, Brainstorm Mobile Solutions, for location-based services across the operator's global footprint. The three-year contract will see Brainstorm roll out its mobile marketing platform to support Telefónica's global operations through a variety of specialised solutions. [read more]


NTT DoCoMo and Qualcomm subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, have announced the launch of what is claimed to be the first commercial VoLTE service in Japan. The VoLTE solution is based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor and enables SMS, HD voice, video telephony and single radio voice call continuity; designed to allow for a smooth transition between 3G and LTE. The UK Post Office is set to launch an MVNO in the British mobile market after striking a deal with operator EE. The postal network will sell the mobile service through its brand, and it will be initially launched in 50 branches, online and on the phone. [read more]


Bosnian operator m:tel is set to enter the Austrian telecoms market through an MVNO offering in a bid to help concerns over a lack of competition in the market. The company has declined to confirm which mobile network it will use for the offering, with increased competition in Austria seen as vital in Europe. [read more]
