Bosnian operator m:tel to launch MVNO in Austria

Bosnian operator m:tel is set to enter the Austrian telecoms market through an MVNO offering in a bid to help concerns over a lack of competition in the market.

The company has declined to confirm which mobile network it will use for the offering, with increased competition in Austria seen as vital in Europe.

Analysts believe the success of Austria’s smaller market could pave the way for further consolidation in the continent.

Hutchison Whampoa’s Drei acquired Orange Austria earlier last year, cutting the country’s operating players from four to three.

As a provision of the deal, Hutchison said it would offer network access to MVNOs at cost price to boost competition, but until now, no new MVNOs have been launched.

The Bosnian operator will reportedly target the former Yugoslavian minority, which is said to be Austria’s second largest immigration group.

M:tel said it will provide fixed-line services, in addition to voice, text, short message and data services.

Austria’s three operating operators are Telekom Austria, Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile and Drei and Austrian regulators said there could be new players entering the market in Q4 2014.
