Post Office to launch MVNO with EE in UK

The UK Post Office is set to launch an MVNO in the British mobile market after striking a deal with operator EE.

The postal network will sell the mobile service through its brand, and it will be initially launched in 50 branches, online and on the phone.

It will roll out the service across the rest of the country later in the year, and the mobile play adds to its home phone and broadband package, for which it already has 500,000 subscribers.

“This is part of the Post Office’s ambitious commercial vision to drive growth in its financial and home services businesses while underpinning its status as the number one mails retailer,” the group said in a statement.

As an MNVO, the Post Office will offer mobile services to its customers through EE’s network under its own brand. The group took the decision to launch mobile services after a holding a survey that indicated one in three people intended to move away from mainstream mobile providers.

“We believe we are in an ideal position to offer a genuine alternative with over a third also saying they would consider us as their mobile provider,” said Martin George, CCO at Post Office.

The UK government backed a £640 million investment plan earlier this year to transform the Post Office.
