Telefónica, Cyan and Red Hat collaborate on NFV architecture

Spanish operator Telefónica, SDN specialist Cyan and software solution provider Red Hat have today announced an agreement for the development of a network functions virtualisation (NFV) architecture.

The architecture will be designed to support the eventual placement of virtualised network functions (VNFs).

Cyan will deliver its Blue Planet NFV orchestrator which will optimise enhancements being made to Red Hat’s OpenStack platform, developed in partnership with Telefónica.

“Cyan is proud to be working on such an innovative technological project with industry thought leaders Telefónica and Red Hat,” said Michael Hatfield, president at Cyan. “Cyan’s Blue Planet is a multi-vendor NFV orchestrator, ensuring that communications service providers (CSPs) can successfully use this architecture for a wide variety of use cases.”

The OpenStack platform provides the tools needed to manage a range of virtual machines, such as automation and integration and Radhesh Balakrishnan, GM of virtualisation and OpenStack at Red Hat, said it will help to power the growth of NFV.

“NFV offers CSPs the ability to reduce infrastructure costs via simplified network design and management, while increasing agility to achieve faster time to revenue,” said Balakrishnan. “Along with OpenStack, NFV truly has the ability to revolutionise the way CSPs build and operate their networks.”

Enrique Algaba, network innovation and virtualisation director at Telefónica I+D-Global CTO Unit, said that the company sees NFV as an important and transformative technology.

It is Telefónica’s belief that the correct allocation of storage in relation to a particular type of VNF is critical to delivering the performance needed for these telco-grade network functions.

Earlier this week, NTT DoCoMo announced the successful completion of NFV trials in partnership with vendors Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco and NEC.
