ITW EXCLUSIVE: DE-CIX NY connects with Akamai

DE-CIX New York, the US arm of the German internet exchange, has announced that it has connected Akamai as the first customer for its New York operations.

Akamai is connecting into DE-CIX’s internet exchange at its 111 8th Ave access site in New York City.

“Having this new internet exchange in New York will enable us to connect with other peering partners across a resilient Ethernet platform,” said Steven J Schecter, senior manager of network architecture for Akamai. “DE-CIX is helping us to make good on our customer promise to deliver internet content intelligently.”

The move builds on a partnership between the two companies which saw Akamai use DE-CIX’s services in Europe and the Middle East.

“DE-CIX New York develops a peering ecosystem that delivers the capacity all types of Internet service providers need to cope with the growing volumes of global data,” said Frank Orlowski, CMO for DE-CIX.

“The true value of an Internet exchange is the number of other participants any one player can connect to across the platform. We are quickly growing DE-CIX New York to be one of the five largest internet exchanges in the world by 2020, and having well-respected companies like Akamai join us makes the New York metro a better place for ISPs and carriers,” he added.

Since its launch in November last year - marking the entrance of DE-CIX into the US market - DE-CIX NY has been rapidly expanding by securing dark fibre assets.

In March this year, Akamai partnered with Telefónica in an effort to improve the Spain-based operator’s internet infrastructure and ensure a significant increase in speed and performance for mobile and broadband users.

Akamai delivered the very first packets of data across DE-CIX New York last week, on May 9. DE-CIX is aiming to grow its US presence as part of an expansion plan that is designed to complement its existing European operations.
