Algérie Télécom selects Ericsson for LTE network deployment

Algérie Télécom and Swedish vendor Ericsson have signed an agreement which will see the deployment of an end-to-end LTE network in Algeria, claimed to be the first LTE and VoLTE enabled network in Northern Africa.

The Algerian operator selected Ericsson’s LTE solution in an effort to provide greater coverage and better services for Algérie Telecom’s fixed-broadband subscribers, including voice and video calling over LTE (VoLTE).

“Algérie Télécom is bringing the world’s latest technology to its customers, providing faster, more reliable broadband and high-quality communication services to an increasingly demanding subscriber base,” said Nunzio Mirtillo, head of Ericsson region Mediterranean.

The initial deployment will cover “white spots” that do not have access to broadband, which will then extend to high-density locations.

“Our close relationship with Ericsson made it possible to roll out the LTE network in a record time, so our customers could start enjoying LTE reliable high speed broadband services,” said Azouaou Mehmel, president and CEO of Algérie Télécom.

“The launch of LTE is a key milestone in Algérie Télécom’s strategic plan of broadband development in Algeria.”

At the end of April this year, Ericsson appointed Rima Qureshi as the group’s new chief strategy officer (CSO).
