Telekom Austria subsidiary wins big at Slovenian spectrum auction

Telekom Austria’s Slovenian subsidiary, Si.mobil, has been awarded approximately 48% of the mobile spectrum offered at the country’s auction.

Slovenia’s second-largest mobile operator was awarded two 90MHz blocks of FDD spectrum and one 45MHz allocation of TDD spectrum, for a total cost of €63.9 million.

The auction was completed this week, with Telekom Slovenije and Tusmobil also securing spectrum.

Si.mobil will use the spectrum as part of its strategy to invest in network infrastructure in rural areas of Slovenia and intends to cover 50% of the country’s population with LTE technology by the year end. This is expected to grow to 95% coverage within the next three years.

Telekom Austria will finance the spectrum acquisition using existing cash, which must be paid within 15 days of the regulator’s decision.

In September 2012, Si.mobil claimed to be the first Slovenian operator to launch commercial LTE services in the country.
