Telefónica to invest in Chilean operations

Spain-based Telefónica is set to boost its operations in Chile with an investment of $600 million according to local reports.

The upgrades are designed to expand and improve the operator's 3G and 4G footprints.

"Today in Chile, the network development is occurring primarily in the mobile area. This is the main investment priority and this translates in the deployment of 3G [technology] which we already had, and more recently, in 4G networks, which will be a key priority for the company,” said Claudio Munoz, president of Telefónica Chile.

“The second priority is fibre-optic deployments, to complement 3G and 4G wireless networks," Munoz added.

Last month, it was reported that Telefónica offered to lease spectrum and provide roaming services to a new operator in the German market, in an effort to gain approval from the European Commission for its takeover of E-Plus.
