The heavily indebted carrier is trying to delay the $3 billion spectrum auction in an effort to win more time to complete its merger with Portugal Telecom, where it plans to raise $6.3 billion as part of the deal.
The spectrum is occupied by analogue broadcast TV and the auction would free it up for 4G mobile services.
Earlier this month Oi’s rivals, Telefonica (Vivo), Claro Brazil and TIM Brasil, were also calling for a delay, but they have recently agreed to the timeline of the auction.
“The 700MHz frequency is a very important resource in Brazil and in the rest of the world to strengthen 4G networks,” said Rodrigo Abreu, CEO at TIM.
“TIM is interested in being part of the auction process, as part of reinforcing our strategy to develop broadband in the country.”
Brazilian national telecoms regulator Anatel has said that it does not plan to delay the auction.
