Interoute has today launched a virtual data centre (VDC) in Hong Kong. The VDC is designed to support global enterprises with a presence in Asia, enabling them fast access to applications and data stored in the Interoute cloud. [read more]

South Korean operator SK Telecom has announced that it has commercialised Uplink CoMP (Uplink Co-operative Multi-Point). The technology is designed to increase mobile data upload speeds by 20% on LTE, as data-hungry consumers continue to demand faster networks. [read more]

Bharti Airtel and Dubai-based satellite service provider Thuraya have signed an agreement to deliver mobile satellite products to Airtel’s African unit. From May this year, the deal will provide voice and broadband connectivity to Airtel’s customers in 17 African countries through Thuraya’s satellite network. [read more]

Tele2 Russia is preparing for the launch of a 4G LTE network in Crimea, Ukraine, according to local reports. The news follows a statement from the Russian prime minister in March that it was unacceptable for sensitive information to be transmitted by foreign operators. [read more]

UAE operator Etisalat has partnered with Alcatel-Lucent to deploy LTE Advanced technology for what it claims is the first time in the region. The move will allow operators to take full advantage of their existing spectrum assets by combining multiple spectrum bands, enabling higher mobile broadband download speeds. [read more]

DTAC TriNET, a subsidiary of Thai mobile operator DTAC, has announced a partnership with Ericsson for the roll-out of an LTE network in the country. The network is being deployed on DTAC’s 2100MHz band, and the operator’s long-term partner Ericsson has been selected as sole supplier for user data management, evolved packet core and circuit core solutions.[read more]

Chinese online retailer JD.com is set to launch MVNO services in May under the brand name JD Mobile. JD.com was one of the eleven companies to win MVNO licences in China in January this year, and serves as one of the largest B2C providers in the country. [read more]



 

The Kenyan government has confirmed plans to build a 4G network next year and is in talks with operators to roll out the network. According to the country’s telecoms minister, Kenya is looking to launch 4G broadband in an effort to raise the internet’s contribution to economic growth, which it hopes will increase to 10% in 2017 from 2.9% this year. BT’s subsidiary Openreach has today announced the extension of its high-bandwidth, optical services portfolio for communications provider (CP) customers, in partnership with Ciena. The additional services include what is claimed to be the UK’s first ever 100Gbps solution, and are expected to enable CPs to transport larger amounts of data over longer distances. [read more]

Telecom Luxembourg Private Operator (TLPO) has this week signed a bilateral agreement with Cypriot operator PrimeTel. The agreement – signed yesterday during the World Hosting Day in Rust, Germany – will see TLPO extend its operations in Cyprus and the Middle East via a local interchange point. [read more]
