Vodafone could make cable acquisition in Portugal

UK-based Vodafone is reportedly open to the idea of making cable acquisitions in Portugal.

The operator – which this month closed a deal to acquire Spain’s largest cable operator, Ono – is now open to acquiring smaller cable companies in Portugal, according to analysts..

Vittorio Colao, the company’s CEO, is reported to have said it would make an acquisition should a company in the country become available, and would also be open to building fibre in Portugal if a takeover was not possible.

According to reports in the UK, Vodafone could be interested in making a bid for the Portuguese operations owned by cable group Altice, which is also involved in the bidding war for French company SFR.

Altice owns Cabovisao and Oni in Portugal, and Vodafone could make moves for the companies in its bid to connect 1.5 million homes with high-speed broadband in the country.

Vodafone is also in the market to make a large acquisition in the UK, according to analysts.
