GBI and Djibouti Telecom pen MoU agreement

GBI and Djibouti Telecom have struck a deal which will see the Middle Eastern service provider land its cable into the Djibouti Data Center (DDC).

The two companies have signed an MoU for the extension of the cable which is expected to provide a platform for growth of GBI’s customers.

“Djibouti’s strategic position in East Africa and the extending reach of GBI’s network system spanning from Singapore to all major cities in Europe will enhance our customer’s global and regional business interests,” said Ahmed Mekky, board member and CEO at GBI.

“This strategic partnership, which is in line with our network system expansion, will pave the way for further growth into a market that create new and exciting opportunities for GBI – it will also allow GBI to address the growing needs in the market.”

Djibouti is one of the fastest growing telecoms markets in the region, and is expected to serve as a unique gateway to millions of customers in East African countries.

“The addition of the GBI cable system to the DDC ecosystem significantly enhances the DDC’s emergence as the leading strategic global and regional hub in East Africa,” said John Melick, chairman of the DDC.

“DDC is actively contributing to enhancing the communications landscape in Djibouti, East Africa, transforming the economies, and further empowering the business communities by securing connectivity.”

Earlier this week, DDC launched an internet exchange point designed to help keep local traffic in east Africa local, by reducing the need to exchange traffic at other peering points outside of the country.

Capacity will be holding a Smart Media event as part of Capacity Middle East 2014 tomorrow (March 6), focussing on content delivery and monetisation across the entire ecosystem.
