Alcatel-Lucent develops NFV solution with China Mobile

China Mobile and French vendor Alcatel-Lucent have today announced their joint development of network functions virtualisation (NFV) for mobile operators.

The two companies have been using Alcatel-Lucent’s LTE radio access network (RAN) technology and virtualised evolved packet core (vEPC) in a multi-vendor environment, to demonstrate that an open mobile cloud network can enhance agility, efficiency and scale.

Alcatel-Lucent is a prime vendor of China Mobile’s TD LTE network, and the operator is driving NFV for the creation of a greener and more efficient network.

“As IP networking and ultra-broadband access specialists, we are delivering carrier grade solutions to some of the largest LTE networks in the world, helping customers such as China Mobile manage the unprecedented demand being placed on their networks today,” said Dave Geary, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s wireless business.

“Having started work on our own virtualisation plans before the NFV initiative was founded; we are heavily investing in delivering open carrier-grade virtualised solutions and have a real understanding of what is needed in a cloud environment.”

China Mobile expects NFV technology to reduce costs and automate service life-cycle management to deliver high quality services on a large scale.

Today, Huawei also announced a development in NFV technology with the launch of its own solution.
