Uninor to build out its network

Telenor’s Indian arm, Uninor, has announced plans to expand its network by 30%, through the deployment of 5,000 network sites.

The operator will invest $98 million over the next five months to improve network coverage in its six circles of Uttar Pradesh West, Uttar Pradesh East, Bihar (including Jharkhand), Maharashtra and Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.

“With this expansion, Uninor will now extend its Sabse Sasta services [tariffs with unlimited on-network calls] to millions of new subscribers in its six circles as we strengthen our network in the areas we already cover,” said Morten Karlsen Sørby, CEO of Uninor. “Achieving profitability in record time shows that Uninor can continue to keep its most affordable tariffs position in the market, while offering a profitable business proposition to its distributors and retailers and expanding its network coverage. This will continue to be our strategy in 2014.”

Sørby was appointed CEO in January, after previous CEO Yogesh Malik resigned in November last year.
