Poland cancels LTE spectrum auction

Polish telecoms regulators have today announced that they have cancelled the country’s LTE spectrum auction, due to a technical anomaly.

Initial bids for the auction were due to be submitted last Friday, but a technical problem meant auction rules were unavailable for around two and a half hours.

In a statement, the office of electronic communications (UKE) said that the auction for frequency licences in the 791-861MHz and 832-857MHz bands, as well as in the 2500-2570MHz and 2620-26290MHz bands, has now been cancelled and will start again from the beginning.

The UKE said it wanted to eliminate any possible formal and legal doubts that may accompany the auction procedure following the technical issue.

“My obligation as a regulatory authority is to ensure that all market players may conduct their business in a stable and certain environment,” said Magdalena Gaj, president of the UKE.

“The least-desired scenario would be one in which – due to technical problems with access to the attachments with clarifications of the auction documentation for two and a half hours at night – the auction participants were exposed to the risk of questioning the decisions taken after the auction,” Gaj added.

The UKE has reportedly started work on a new schedule for the auction, and documentation is expected to be published in the next few days.
