Orange and Vodafone move towards mobile network-sharing in Spain

Reports suggest that European players Orange and Vodafone have initiated a mobile network-sharing agreement in Spain.

The deal would see each operator dismantle around 1,000 base transceiver stations in rural areas and move the equipment to its respective partner’s infrastructure.

Eventually, 2,000 sites could be shared, with the cost of rental, security and maintenance split between the two operators.

The deal is seen as a response to a similar deal between rivals Telefónica España and Xfera Móviles, which Orange and Vodafone objected to on competition grounds.

The move follows a partnership deal between the two companies to roll out fibre broadband services in the country, announced in March last year. The joint fibre-optic network is expected to cover six million households in Spain.
