Ooredoo launches 3G in Algeria

Qatari carrier Ooredoo has launched what it claims to be the first commercial 3G network in Algeria.

The network covers ten major cities across the country, including Algiers, Constantine, Oran, Ouargla, Setif, Djelfa and exclusively in Bejaia, Chlef, Bouira and Ghardaia.

Operated by its subsidiary Ooredoo Algeria, formerly known as Nedjma, the network will bring faster mobile broadband speeds across the country.

“We’re proud to say that our 3G network went live within ten days of finalising the licensing process and within twelve the first commercial 3G service in Algeria, delivering a historic moment of technological benefit for the people of our country and contributing to the development of a knowledge-based economy for all,’ said Joseph Ged, Ooredoo Algeria CEO,

Ooredoo first entered the Algerian market in 2003 after acquiring a mobile licence for $421 million.

This year, Ooredoo has also acquired a licence to operate in Myanmar, and has confirmed it will launch 3G services there next year.
