Belgacom to enhance 4G service after spectrum licence award

Belgian operator Belgacom has acquired one of three licences in the 800MHz band from the country’s telecoms regulator, the BIPT (Belgian Institute for Post and Telecommunications).

Belgacom spent €120 million on the licence, which is valid for 20 years, and is expected to use the licence to better the quality of its existing 4G network.

The company was awarded spectrum in the 1.8GHz band in 2011 and in 2012 claimed to be the first operator in Belgium to launch 4G services.

Belgacom will use the licence to deliver much faster speeds on its customer’s mobile devices, as well as improving fixed-line internet connectivity.

The company expects that by the end of the year, its 4G coverage will reach 50% of the population.
